Another Versatile Blogger

I know that I tend to over-think things sometimes, and when I was recently awarded the Versatile Blogger Award, it was no different.  I’ve seen this award so many times.  The cynic in me wonders… whoa, have chain letters found us in the blogosphere too?  The rebel that I am (not really– I actually happen to be a major rule-follower) deliberately doesn’t pass chain letters along.  It’s amazing how chain letters highlight the human propensity to live in fear.  In fact, chain letters are quite cruel.

“If you don’t pass this to 400 people in the next 20 minutes, you will die a horrible death tomorrow.”

If it’s not fear, then it’s the propensity to look for an easy way out, clinging to the false hopes that easy-wealth will find us.  We’ve all seen the promise by Bill Gates to pay us a large sum of money just to pass on some Microsoft email.  I’m still baffled that years later people actually pass that along with the note, “I normally don’t do this, but you never know…”  Why do we fall for this?  I guess it’s not unlike buying a Powerball ticket, and I guess I’m guilty of doing that on occasion because you never know…

So when I was notified of the award, my first reaction was to search and search in an attempt to find out its origin and determine if it was legitimate or not?  What makes it so special if everyone gets them by the sheer fact that when 1 person receives the award, they nominate 15 more?  It’s like a pyramid scheme with nothing at stake.  I’ve even seen it on blogs that don’t wow me (not your blog, of course.)  Thankfully though, with the Versatile Blogger Award, there is no catch for sending it on or not.  I’m not guaranteed great fortune or terrible destruction based on my participation in this chain.  Maybe just a few warm fuzzies.

With that in mind, I decided that chain letter format or not, there is some great value to this award.

In a world of wondering who has “liked” our blogs or “followed” us just so they can get more exposure for their blog, this award allows us to spend some time and honor our fellow bloggers… and maybe take a moment to be a little self-absorbed (except for the tell 7 things about yourself part.)  It is a way to show that we respect them and we like what they have to say.  I love to find great blogs, and I have discovered in the last 6 months that the interaction between us bloggers is one of the best parts of blogging.  I know I’m not the only one that loves the sense of community that it creates.  (That’s 6 times using a form of the word “blog” in just 4 sentences– nice.)

So chain letter or not, this is my chance to really tell the people whose blogs I read that I appreciate what they have to say.

It was hard to narrow it down, but I have to pick 15. Remember, I’m a rule follower… usually.  Here are the rules for the award:
1) Thank the person who nominated me and link back to them in my post; and 2) share 7 things about myself; and 3) pass the award on to 15 more bloggers that I enjoy; and 4) contact the bloggers I have chosen to let them know that they have been selected!

Violets and Cardamom… thank you for including me on your list!  If I could nominate the person who nominated me, you would be right at the top.  She shares all things that she loves– music, art, photography, fashion, design, etc…  I am especially excited for a recent post titled NPR’s 100 Favorite Songs of 2011 in which she lists every song with a link to listen.  It makes me want to play a song everyday from her list and blog about the experience… er, maybe not.

Now, for the 7 things about me:

1) My favorite/most interesting place I’ve seen up until now is Petra, Jordan.

2) I won the Premio Clavileno Award for Excellence in Spanish upon graduation from Tulane U.  It was especially cool for me because I was 1 of about 5 that didn’t study abroad junior year.  I always felt like my speaking skills were sub-par compared to my classmates and felt insecure speaking in class.

3) I played Lacrosse 1 year in high school and didn’t catch 1 ball… ever.

4) I love to do jigsaw puzzles.

5) It typically takes me hours to write 1 blog post, including this one.

6) I love potty humor.  Just hearing the word “poo” makes me laugh.

7)  I bought my Trinity costume 9 years ago.  I try to wear it every Halloween or to any costume party that I can because it makes me feel like a badass.

And now for the 15 bloggers (I’ve also added some of my favorite posts by them):

1) Nise en Scene –  I love her photos and her content.  A visit to her blog makes for a tranquil escape.  If you’ve ever eaten ramen (not the 25 cent version,) you’ll appreciate and be impressed by this.

2) Boy Mom Blog–  I don’t have kids, nor am I easily interested in all-things-kids, but she has a way of telling a funny story that keeps me entertained.  Check out one of her many “bad mommy” moments.  She said it, not me.

3) Heather Christina Schmidt–  She’s snarky, and always says many things that we are all thinking.  One of the many brilliant posts is Your Typical Black Friday Shopper.

4) Magsx2’s Blog–  talk about versatile, she shares videos, jokes, and other random things that she finds.  Plus, she’s an Aussie!  There’s nothing like the dose of Australian cuteness found here.

5) Fly Far and Fast– he has some very cool photos and picks some pretty random things to write about, all travel themed of course.  I can’t help but choose 2: World’s Smokiest Countries and Dangerous Roads.

6) Accidentally Yours–  she’s witty, makes me laugh, and is relatable.  It’s tough for me to narrow her posts down to my favorite because I love all of them, so I’ll settle on this.

7) Like Your Teeth – this dentist proves there is more to life than just teeth while providing some pretty helpful dental advice.  Here’s an example.

8) Karma Sutra – I discovered this blog while trying to write this post, and I love it!  She shows that us dental geeks have so much more to offer.  Here’s one of her posts in her easy-to-read style.

9)  Rao Dentistry – a great and entertaining dental blog for patients.  She offers great tips and education like these in a fun, lighthearted manner.  And she also writes bizzy tooth mommy – a great one for dentists.  This describes it best.

10) The Flight of Reason –  he’s not afraid to speak his mind, and his writing is engaging.  Check out this post.

11) eric murtaugh – As he puts it himself, “This isn’t just another lame travel blog where I brag about the places I’ve been or how many miles I’ve racked up.”  While I sometimes like the bragging, I agree that it’s much better for me when there’s a story to it.  Eric is right when he explains why we all need a badass photo of ourselves.

12) MESSYMUSINGSDOTNET – the title is right.  The events in the stories are messy, but honest and somewhat unexpected.  Especially this.

13) aFrankAngle – the name of this blog alone is great.  No one else describes the changing emotions of travel better than this, one of my favorite posts ever.

14) Like a Bump on a Blog –  another very versatile blogger with a great title.  Think of a topic, she’s covering it.  I especially like her “Soapbox Sunday” feature. Not sure where she finds some of them.

15) Miss Demure Restraint – more versatility here.  She demonstrates such sincerity with the connections she has made in the blogosphere.  She is taking a break from blogging for a while, but here’s to hoping she finds her way back soon!

Thank you again, Violets and Cardamom!  And thanks to the list of 15.  Here is my appreciation to you for entertaining and enlightening me.  I know many of you have already received this award, so as I usually do with chain letters, I’ll allow you to break the rules.  You don’t have to pass it on if you don’t want to.  You don’t even need to thank me and link back to my blog if you don’t want to.  And while we’re on that, I’m not sure yet if I’m going to follow rule #4 and notify you of the award.

Because I just don’t feel like it.

  10. Thanks, lolabees, for the mention. I always wondered what it would feel like to win that award, and I was surprised by how excited it made me. Kind of like the janitor getting mentioned in the credits; that tip of the hat or moment of fame goes further than one would think.

  11. You know, I think you perfectly summed up what awards like this are all about. There is such a kick ass community of bloggers out there, all willing to share our tips and experiences together. A part of me knows it makes the world a better place.

So congratulations to you for receiving this well-deserved award! You have a great blog. And thank you for thinking of me when it came time to nominate a few fellow bloggers.

    1. Thanks, Eric, and congrats to you too 😉 It was great fun to make the list, and it actually made me appreciate it even more. My sis commented on my fb about your badass photo post. She has a lot of those…

  12. LOVE the Trinity costume! I had such a girl-crush on her back in college but I’ve never been able to pull of badass sadly (despite trying *repeatedly* . . . ).

And thanks for the blog mention and compliments – you’re so sweet!

  13. Congrats! And I think the word “poo” is hilarious as well! When I saw that in your post, I burst out laughing. Something about it…I don’t know.
